How to choose a pet hotel

Eight questions to ask before you book, from people who answer them every day.

1. Will my pet have their own space?

Ask whether pets from different families ever share a room or run. For cats especially, sharing with strangers is a major source of stress and illness.

2. Who is there at night?

The best pet hotels have someone on site 24 hours a day, often the owners themselves.

3. What vaccinations do you require?

A good hotel insists on up-to-date vaccinations for every guest, and checks the certificate, not just your word.

4. Can you give medication and special diets?

Ask how doses are recorded, and whether there is an extra charge.

5. What happens if my pet gets sick?

Which vet do they use, how quickly, and will they call you first?

6. How will I know they are OK?

Photo updates, webcams or a message on request. Ask before you book, not on day three.

7. Can I visit first?

Any hotel proud of its rooms will show you round. Notice the smell, noise and light.

8. What is the cancellation and deposit policy?

Peak season fills months ahead. Get the deposit terms in writing.
